The first state tournament for the Bemidji High School softball team may not have ended the way the Lumberjacks wanted, but that won’t lessen the history the program made.
In a game pushed back six hours by rain, the Lumberjacks fell 12-1 in six innings Friday afternoon to Academy of Holy Angels in the Class 3A consolation championship at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
With a six-run deficit going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bemidji High School softball team decided it wasn’t ready to go home from its first-ever state tournament appearance without a win.
After an eight-run sixth handed Bemidji an 8-6 lead and a Rocori two-run seventh tied it, junior Evette Morgan dug into the right-handed batter’s box in the bottom of the eighth with two out and Anikka Takkunen on second. Morgan sent a two-run home run over the fence for a 10-8 walk-off win over No. 5 Rocori in the Class 3A consolation semifinals Thursday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
With the first-ever Lumberjacks state tournament victory comes a chance for another, as they’ll take on the Academy of Holy Angels at 9 a.m. today in the Class 3A consolation championship.
