After placing second in the Class A state tournament with a 1-0 double-overtime loss to No. 1 Blake on Friday, a trio of Bemidji High School boys soccer midfielders, as well as attacker Silas Hess, were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Ben Hess, Aspen Galdamez and Pau Mesegue didn’t show up much on the scoresheets during the Jacks’ three games in the tournament, but they did enough to prevent opposing chances and produce opportunities of their own to turn the heads of tournament officials.
The Lumberjacks finished the season with a record of 18-3-1 and a program-best second place finish at the state tournament.
For the BHS girls soccer team, junior Emma Dean represented the Jacks with All-Tournament team honors.
The Bemidji girls wrapped up the season with a 13-5-3 record, matching last year’s state tournament result with a first-round loss to the Zephyrs, who went on to win the title both years.
After 80 minutes of regulation and 10 minutes of overtime, Keegan James, a heavy-legged sophomore from The Blake School, prepared to start the second overtime of Friday’s Class A boys soccer state championship at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Instead of the typical pass to a nearby teammate or a chip into the opposing end for someone to run onto, James instead went straight for the win, and he converted.
Right off the kickoff, he drilled a strike over a leaping Joe Fletcher into the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 state final victory over Bemidji.
Bemidji’s season ends with a record of 19-3-1 and a program-best second-place finish at state after defeating No. 3 Mahtomedi, 1-0, No. 2 Academy of Holy Angels, 3-1, and pushing the top seed to the 91st minute.

With each of its last two wins, the Bemidji High School boys soccer team has made history. Never before had the Lumberjacks won a state tournament game despite winning the Section 8A title in each of the last two seasons.
This year, though, they’ve won their quarterfinal and semifinal games and now find themselves a game away from the ultimate goal: a state title.
Unseeded Bemidji defeated No. 3 Mahtomedi in the state opener, No. 2 Academy of Holy Angels in the semis, and now, fittingly, is set to take on the No. 1 seed in The Blake School at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium.
