The Bemidji High School volleyball team’s season came to an end Wednesday night as the ninth-seeded Lumberjacks fell, 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-16), to No. 8 seed Alexandria in a Section 8AAA Tournament first-round match.
The Lumberjacks finished the season at 11-17, while the Cardinals improved to 13-14 and moved on in the tournament.
The Bemidji High School volleyball team will enter the Section 8-3A Tournament as the No. 9 seed and will head to Alexandria to face the No. 8 Cardinals in one of four preliminary games at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24.
The Lumberjacks (11-16) played Alex (12-14) in their season opener at Alexandria Area High School and fell in four sets (25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 29-27). In the QRF rankings, the Cardinals finished the regular season 51st in Class 3A, with Bemidji following in 57th.
The winner between Bemidji at and Alex advance to the quarterfinals, where No. 1 Willmar is waiting after its first-round bye.
The Chaska Invitational was the last challenge for the Bemidji High School volleyball team before the Section 8-3A tournament, and the Lumberjacks used it as a last opportunity to improve prior to their first playoff contest.
The Jacks went 2-2 on the day Saturday, losing to Class 3A No. 1 Champlin Park (26-2) 25-19, 25-11 and Mayer Lutheran (18-9) 25-19, 25-21 in pool play before defeating Winona (11-14) 25-19, 25-16 and Cretin-Derham Hall (6-21) 25-21, 25-22.
Bemidji will take an 11-16 record into the section playoffs, which start Wednesday, Oct. 24. The bracket and seedings for the tournament will be available on mshsl.org today.
