Nordic Skiers Compete at MSHSL State Meet in Giant's Ridge

The Lumberjack girls, who qualified for state as a team for the third consecutive season, finished with 193 points to take 15th in the 16-team field at Giants Ridge Recreation Area in Biwabik.
Senior Kinley Prestegard paced the Jacks with a 64th-place finish in a time of 40:10.8. She was followed by junior Gwen Youso in 90th (41:01.8), sophomore Demi Fisher in 119th (42:39) and freshman Mary Beth Mathews in 134th (43:48.7) to round out the team’s scorers.

Other Bemidji finishers included sophomore Lily Krona in 143rd (44:46.4), senior Sarah Pollock in 148th (45:19.4) and senior Alyse Stone in 153rd (46:19.7).

Sophomore Nick Youso led Bemidji by posting a time of 32:46.6 to place 47th overall, meeting his goal of a top-50 finish. Sophomore Logan Jensen followed in 78th (34:10.5) and senior Zac Fouquerel-Skoe in 92nd (34:28.7) for the Lumberjacks.

Nordic Skiers Get Ready for MSHSL State Meet

In recent years, the Bemidji High School girls Nordic skiing team has made a habit of making it to the state meet. This time around, they’re bringing company.

The Lumberjack girls are taking off for their third consecutive state meet in Biwabik today, where they’ll compete for a state title in a field of 16 teams. Three boys skiers are joining them as individuals for their first taste of state.

The meet begins at 10 a.m. today at Giants Ridge Recreation Area with 120 skiers in each of the boys and girls fields. Walters said the Lumberjacks will be ready for it.

For the third consecutive season, the Bemidji High School girls Nordic skiing team has claimed the Section 8 championship. Kinley Prestegard finished second for the Jacks with a combined time of 37:57.7, while Gwendoline Youso was third in 38:25.7. Demi Fisher (39:43.4, seventh) and Sarah Pollock (41:53.6, 17th) rounded out the scorers for Bemidji. A team score of 375 topped the 11-team field at Camp Ripley in Little Falls, and launched the girls back into the state meet.
They’ll be joined by three individual Lumberjacks from the boys side (Logan Jensen, Nick Youso and Zac Fouquerel-Skoe), which took third as a team and just missed the cut to join them.

Walters was named the Section 8 Coach of the Year on Tuesday, as well, and Bemidji’s Nina Lubarski was named Section 8 Assistant Coach of the Year.
