BRAINERD -- The Bemidji High School girls Nordic skiers took first place and the boys team third in the Brainerd Nordic Invitational on Saturday.

“The girls were just solid,” BHS head coach Mark Walters said. “They pulled off a beautiful race today… We had a couple kids that really seemed to step it up on the boys side and kind of help scoring-wise. That was really good to see some younger kids that we tried in this event.”

The Lumberjack girls had a score of 377 to top the 10-team leaderboard, just ahead of Brainerd’s 356 and Mora’s 352. For the boys, Bemidji’s 355 trailed only Mora (364) and Moorhead (358).

The race was a continuous pursuit, meaning skiers started in classical skis for the first leg, then switched to skate skis for the second half of the 11-kilometer race.

“We don’t do a lot of these continuous pursuits, but they’re pretty fun,” Walters said. “There’s pretty fast and furious action.”

Individually, Gwendoline Youso recorded a 43:34.3 time for a third-place finish to lead BHS. Kinley Prestegard was close behind in fourth at 44:31.5, while Demi Fisher (47:15.1, eighth) and Lily Krona (49:42.7, 12th) rounded out the Jacks’ top four.

On the boys’ side, Nick Youso paced BHS with a fourth-place time of 36:48.3. Logan Jensen came in ninth at 38:40.2, and Zac Skoe was 16th at 41:37.1. Nathan Vleck finished in 42:29.8 for 20th, as well.

Wren Scott Lumbar of St. Cloud Tech won the girls heat at 42:13.6, while Mora’s Cooper Lennox came in at 35:07.9 to lead all boys finishers.

The Lumberjacks will return to action at the Mesabi East Invitational at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5.
