Bailey Drewes, a 2011 graduate of Bemidji High School, finished 66th out of 390 runners in the women's race at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta on Feb. 29 with a time of 2 hours, 42 minutes, 11 seconds. The top-three finishers in the women's and men's races earned spots on the 2020 U.S. Olympic team that will travel to Tokyo this summer. A graduate of the College of St. Benedict, Drewes now resides in Ithaca, N.Y., where she works as a nutrition research coordinator for Cornell University.

For Bailey Drewes, a clinical research coordinator in the Division of Nutritional Sciences & former BHS Lumberjack Female Athlete of the Year in 2011, competitive running offered not just exercise but camaraderie.

Drewes & her training partner, Chelsea Benson, ran during middle school, high school and college, but didn’t feel they found their niche – or their community – until they started running marathons.

“I never ever would have imagined that I’d qualify for the Olympic trials,” Drewes said. “I didn’t feel like I reached my full potential in high school or college – I think I’ve always been a long-distance person. Running the marathon, I finally found where my heart was.”

Since qualifying for the trials – which, for women, requires running the 26.2-mile event in 2 hours, 45 minutes or faster – their goal has shifted to reaching the more elite “A” standard, requiring a 2:37 time. Their passion for marathon running reflects a nationwide trend: 511 women qualified for the 2020 Olympic marathon trials, compared with 198 in 2016.

They’re also active members of the local running community. Benson is among the organizers of a local Facebook group, Ithaca Runners, open to anyone in the area who is interested in running.

CC Runners Compete in Post-Season Meet

11/02/2020, 3:00pm CST
By BHS Activities

Although they didn’t have an official state meet to cap the season, Bemidji High School cross country still went up against the state’s best on Friday and Saturday at Island Pine Golf Course in Atwater.

Competing in the TCRC Cross Country Showcase -- a de facto state meet since the Minnesota State High School League opted to not hold post-section competition this fall -- the BHS boys placed 16th out of 20 “large class” teams, or among the Class AA field. Mia Hoffmann, the lone would-be state qualifier for the Lumberjack girls, placed squarely in the middle of the pack at 74th of 155 runners.

Girls CC, Hoffman, Places 7th at Section 8AA Meet

Mia Hoffman ranked among the top 10 runners at the Section 8AA girls cross country meet Friday as she led Bemidji High School to a seventh-place finish at Greenwood Golf Course.

Hoffman’s eighth-place time of 19:42.7 paced the Lumberjacks, who hit peak form at the right time of year.

Unfortunately, Hoffman and the BHS boys team -- winners of Thursday’s Section 8AA boys meet -- saw their seasons end one step shorter than normal. The Minnesota State High School League decided not to hold post-section competition this fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Boys CC Sweep Section 8AA Meet

There was a little more waiting that went into the crowning moment for the Bemidji High School boys cross country team Thursday at Greenwood Golf Course.

By the end of the day, the Lumberjacks learned they had claimed the Section 8AA team title, their 17th in program history and first since 2016.

BHS didn’t have only a team title to celebrate.

Nathan Alto’s time of 16:29.3 could not be beat as the BHS senior garnered the individual section crown, the first by a Lumberjack boys runner since Sam Carlson won back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013.
