Girls Soccer: Sabres dethrone Jacks in 8A championship

By BHS Activities

It took 100 minutes, a stunning equalizer and an unfavorable shootout, but somebody finally ended the Bemidji High School girls soccer team’s dynasty in Section 8A.

Sartell-St. Stephen shocked the Lumberjacks during Saturday’s Section 8A championship game in Alexandria, guiding a 1-1 draw into penalty kicks and prevailing 4-3 to usher in a new reign over the region.

Bemidji was riding a 15-game Section 8A Tournament winning streak going into Saturday’s title game, and the Jacks were one win away from becoming the section’s first-ever four-peat champion. But Sartell-St. Stephen denied BHS the glory and instead captured it for themselves.

All of a sudden, three years as champions felt far too short.

The Lumberjacks graduate five seniors in Liberty Dickerson, Emma Neubeck, Rosie Laitala, Oelrich and Morin.

Girls Soccer Wins Section 8A North Final in Heartstopper Finish

The quest to become Section 8A’s first-ever four-peat champion is almost complete for the Bemidji High School girls soccer team.

BHS made the latest step to the throne Wednesday night in Alexandria after 100 back-and-forth minutes, eight rounds of hold-your-breath penalty kicks and one unfriendly post that launched the Lumberjacks back into the section title game.

With the North subsection crown up for grabs, the fourth-seeded Jacks and second-seeded Cardinals played to an even 1-1 draw over 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of sudden-death extra time. Finally, after eight rounds of PKs, BHS outlasted Alexandria by a 6-5 margin behind a keeper who didn’t falter.

Bemidji advances to the program’s fourth consecutive Section 8A championship game. The Jacks will face South No. 1 seed Sartell-St. Stephen, who beat BHS 2-0 during the regular season.

Due to weather, the game has been moved to a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 24, back in Alexandria.

The Section 8A semifinal games featuring the Bemidji High School boys and girls soccer teams have been postponed to Wednesday, Oct. 21, due to forecasted snow on Tuesday. Both games will be played in Alexandria.

For the boys, third-seeded BHS (5-6-1) was scheduled to travel to top-seeded Pelican Rapids (9-2) in the North subsection championship, but they'll now kick off at 5 p.m. Wednesday from Alexandria Area High School.

On the girls side, the fourth-seeded Lumberjacks (8-3-2) were already scheduled to travel to second-seeded Alexandria (8-1-3), but kickoff has been pushed back by 24 hours to 7 p.m. Wednesday instead.
