This weekend featured the best performances the Bemidji High School girls swimming and diving team had seen all season, co-head coach Woody Leindecker said.
Competing at their home pool, the Lumberjacks placed fifth out of 10 teams in the Section 8A finals, which were held across three sites this weekend due to pandemic restrictions. With 230.5 points, BHS finished right behind fourth-place Fergus Falls (231), while Grand Rapids (535), Detroit Lakes (364) and Park Rapids (360) took the top three spots.
Mady Schmidt had already gone 10-for-10 in the regular season entering Friday’s Section 8A diving finals at Bemidji High School. The Lumberjack had one more win left in her, though the most recent victory was perhaps a little sweeter.
The BHS junior scored a 410.85 over 11 dives to capture the section’s individual diving title. She became the first Bemidji girls diver to do so since Kylei Grosfield in 2014.
Schmidt improved her score from last year’s section meet, where she posted a 377.6 to place fourth and qualified for state as one of the section’s top four divers. She had hoped to better her ninth-place finish at this season’s state meet, but she will not get the opportunity. The Minnesota State High School League opted to not hold post-section competition for fall sports due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Bemidji will return to its home pool at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, when the swimming portion of the Section 8A finals takes place. No prelims will be held. All events will be timed finals, and results will be combined with the two other section sites to determine the overall results.
Bemidji High School will host Section 8A girls swimming and diving meets this week at the BHS swimming pool.
The Section 8A diving meet, hosted by BHS, has been pushed back one day to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, due to the snowstorm that hit the region Thursday. Saturday’s swimming meet at BHS remains scheduled for 1 p.m.
Bemidji is one of three host sites for the section swimming meet due to pandemic restrictions on the number of teams allowed to compete in one location.
Section 8A’s 10 teams are spread across three sites this weekend. BHS will host one site and compete alongside Fosston/Bagley, Park Rapids and Grand Rapids; Detroit Lakes will host Fergus Falls and Perham; and Warroad will host Crookston and Thief River Falls.
All divers will compete together in Bemidji.
