For the first time since 2008, the Bemidji High School girls tennis team reigns as section champions once again.
The Lumberjacks captured the fifth section title in program history Thursday afternoon in Brainerd, triumphant by a 5-2 score over St. Cloud Tech in the Section 8AA championship.
The Jacks won’t advance to the state tournament, however. The Minnesota State High School League canceled all play beyond section tournaments this fall due to coronavirus concerns.
Nonetheless, Bemidji finishes 13-1 on the season, including six straight wins to close the year. More importantly, they follow in the footsteps of the 1989, 1999, 2007 and 2008 teams and join an exclusive club as the program’s only section champions.
The Bemidji High School girls tennis team is only two wins away from a Section 8AA title after Thursday’s 5-2 victory over Alexandria. The win advanced the No. 2-seeded Lumberjacks to the North subsection final, where they’ll meet top-seeded Brainerd on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
BHS got off to a strong start in taking a 3-0 lead thanks to straight-set wins from Savannah Haugen at No. 1 singles, Chloe Hasbargen and Paige Anderson at No. 2 doubles, and Tatum Offerdahl at No. 3 singles.
Bemidji will now travel to Brainerd for a showdown between the North’s top two seeds in the subsection final. The Warriors handed the Jacks their lone defeat of the season, a 6-1 loss in Brainerd on Sept. 22. The match is set for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
The South subsection’s top two seeds -- No. 1 Becker and No. 2 St. Cloud Tech -- are set to meet on the other side of the bracket Tuesday in Becker.
The Section 8AA final is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15 in Sartell.
The Bemidji High School girls tennis team breezed against Sartell-St. Stephen on Tuesday, winning its regular-season finale in straight sets across the board and posting a 7-0 victory in Sartell.
BHS finished second in the Central Lakes Conference standings with a 9-1 record. However, first-place Brainerd is currently quarantined for two weeks due to a coronavirus outbreak within the school, meaning the No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup scheduled for Thursday has been canceled.
Bemidji now awaits details for the Section 8AA Tournament, which is scheduled to begin next week.
