Just when everything was rolling for the Bemidji High School boys basketball team, it all came crashing down.

The Lumberjacks surmounted an unlikely comeback and had Sartell-St. Stephen on the ropes, but the Sabres closed on a 14-2 run over the final seven minutes to win 56-47 in a Section 8-3A Tournament quarterfinal clash in Sartell.

Gavin Luksik finished with 14 points, 15 rebounds and five steals to spearhead the BHS cause. Severts neared a double-double of his own with 11 points and nine boards, while Arel hit eight points.

The Lumberjacks finish the season 6-11 and graduate five seniors in Isaiah Biehn, Trevor Rohder, Williams, Arel and LaValley.

Boys Basketball Tops Grand Rapids 55-41

Gavin Luksik made sure the Bemidji High School boys basketball team entered the playoffs on a high note.

The junior forward produced a 21-point, 15-rebound double-double on Tuesday as the Lumberjacks closed the regular season on a 55-41 win in Grand Rapids.

BHS owned a 22-17 lead at the break behind 10 points from Luksik, and Bemidji outscored the Thunderhawks (7-10) by a 33-24 margin after halftime to cushion the lead.

The Jacks will bring their 6-10 record and No. 6 seed into the Section 8-3A Tournament, which begins with a 7 p.m. tipoff at No. 3 seed Sartell-St. Stephen on Friday, March 19.

Boys Basketball to Play Sartell in Section 8AA Quarterfinals

The Bemidji High School boys basketball team will open up the playoffs at Sartell-St. Stephen after earning the No. 6 seed in Sunday’s Section 8-3A seedings release.

The Lumberjacks will face the No. 3-seeded Sabres in the rubber match of the season series. Sartell-St. Stephen (9-9) beat BHS 76-55 in the season opener on Jan. 19, while Bemidji won the rematch 62-49 on Feb. 25. Both teams won on the road.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, March 19, in Sartell.

The winner will face either No. 2-seeded Sauk Rapids-Rice or No. 7 Little Falls on Tuesday, March 23, at the high seed in the semifinal round.

On the other half of the bracket, top-seeded Alexandria will host No. 8 St. Cloud Tech, while No. 4 Detroit Lakes meets No. 5 St. Cloud Apollo.

The Section 8-3A championship game is scheduled for Friday, March 26, at the high seed.

Bemidji currently owns a 5-10 record and will close the regular season at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, with a road game at Grand Rapids.
